A three-dimensional porous structure is produced. Afirst layer of metal powder is deposited and scanned witha beam to form a portion of a plurality of predeterminedunit cells. At least one additional layer of metalpowder is deposited onto a previous layer and a beam isrepeatedly scanned for at least one of the additionallayers in order to continue forming the portions ofpredetermined unit cells. Porosity of the porousstructure is varied by forming unit cells in differentlayers having different shapes or struts of differentdimensions or by randomly perturbing vertices of unitcells to randomize their geometries.
