A hand-held multimodal mobility device for the visually impaired was createdtoincorporate tactile and audible feedback. Proximity sensors measured distancesto obstacleswhile indoors, and a GPS/compass system determined trajectory and magnitude tothedestination while outdoors. A hand-held tactile device rotated to indicate thedirection, and tiltedto show distance. Audible feedback alerted users to immediate obstacles withina predeterminedrange.
