PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tea beverage or coffee beverage that has, while the caffeine content is sufficiently reduced, an appearance and flavor comparable as compared to conventional tea beverages.SOLUTION: Provided is: a method for producing tea beverage or coffee beverage comprising a step in which the tea extract or coffee extract is contacted with white clay satisfying a predetermined condition; and a method for producing tea beverage or coffee beverage comprising a step in which the tea extract or coffee extract is contacted with the white clay satisfying the following condition. Condition A: the content of exchangeable calcium ion per white clay 1 g (dry weight) is 3 mg or less. Condition B: the pH of white clay when suspended in pure water at concentration of 2 wt.%, is 4.0 to 9.0.
