Tiotropium bromide is produced from di-(2-thienyl)-glycolic acid tropenol ester in a two step process comprising oxidation and subsequent quaternisation. Production of tiotropium bromide (I) comprises oxidation of the di-(2-thienyl)-glycolic acid tropenol ester (II) and quaternisation of the resulting di-(2-thienyl)-glycolic acid scopine ester (III) with methyl bromide.
