Provided herein are methods and compositions for suicide gene approaches that include an expression vector comprising a cell cycle dependent promoter that drives expression of a suicide gene. Also provided herein are methods to sensitize proliferative cells to prodrugs following transplantation, but avoid expression of the suicide gene in cells after mitosis, such as neurons.
