A method of preventing or treating damage to peripheral nerves, comprising administering an effective amount of neuregulin to an individual at risk of developing damage to peripheral nerves or to an individual having existing damage to peripheral nerves. The method of claim 1, wherein neuregulin is administered before the surgical procedure. The method of claim 1, wherein the surgical procedure is surgery for prostate cancer. The method of claim 3, wherein the surgical procedure for prostate cancer is a prostatectomy. The method of claim 1, wherein neuregulin is administered to the expectant mother before giving birth. The method of claim 1, wherein neuregulin is administered to the patient before treatment for breast cancer. The method of claim 4, wherein the treatment for breast cancer is a complete or partial mastectomy. A method of treating or preventing erectile dysfunction resulting from damage to peripheral nerves, comprising administering an effective amount of neuregulin, respectively, to an individual having damage to peripheral nerves leading to erectile dysfunction, or to an individual at risk of damage to peripheral nerves. 9. A method for diagnosing the etiology of erectile dysfunction in a patient, said method comprising the steps of: administering an effective amount of neuregulin to a patient having erectile dysfunction； and then, identifying whether erectile dysfunction is reduced； whereby, if there is a decrease in erectile dysfunction after the administration step, then the patient is diagnosed with erectile dysfunction due to damage1.
