Process for the production of fabrics made of cotton which has relief patterns at its surface, the said process consisting in printing on one face of the material, according to patterns corresponding to the relief to be produced, a protective composition preventing the shrinkage of the textile material in the regions corresponding to the surfaces thus printed, and in then subjecting the material thus printed to a subsequent treatment with soda, causing the shrinkage of the unprinted regions, the whole being next subjected to a finishing operation. It is characterised in that: - the protective composition consists of a mixture comprising, on the one hand, a conventional component for imparting water repellency and, on the other hand, an additive chosen from "lustring" products, commonly employed to give materials a uniform lacquered appearance; - after printing, the fabric is subjected to a calendering treatment, the printed face being in contact with a nonadhesive (for example silicone-treated) surface; - the whole thus treated is next subjected to a finishing operation and then dried in a known manner. h
