Disclosed herein is an improvement in methodology of urea-ammoniation of ligno-cellulosic crop residues through addition of surfactant. This method involves treatment of straw/stover with fertilizer grade urea at 2% level (w/w with respect to wheat straw) and industrial grade non-ionic surfactant such as Triton X-100 at 0.5% (v/v with respect to urea solution) level dissolved in tap water at 40% level (v/w with respect to wheat straw). For eg. for urea-ammoniation of 100 kg of straw 2 kg urea is to be dissolved in 40 litres of water and 200 ml of non-ionic surfactant is added. While, offering similar improvement in quality, this methodology offers two benefits over prior art. Less amount of urea is used in this method and the incubation period is reduced by about 60 per cent from 21 days as per prior art to 9 days.
