An interlocking system for blocks, e.g. for earth retaining walls, free standing walls, edging, paving etc., has the butting edges (6.1, 6.2) alternately convex and concave. The facing edges (7.3, 7.4, 5.3, 5.4) have similar vertical axis wave patterns. The same pattern is used for the retaining blocks (2), vertical palisade sections (2), paving blocks, lawn edging blocks etc., to form a common pattern without any unsightly gaps. Each component fits into a square/rectangular cross section (3) which forms the modular base of the interlocking system.
