An airway device for humans or animals is described. The device provides a mask around the laryngeal opening of the patient, creating a air path to the lungs via the trachea thereby aiding respiration. The device is optionally ridged, contoured or dimpled to reduce trauma upon insertion. The device has a back face (125), an opening with a cuff on the front face (22, figure 2) which seals to the larynx, and a protruding/bulging annular tip (132) that wedges in the upper oesophagus.
