A method for making a genetically modified cell that can produce fucosylated compounds. The method comprises the steps: (i) Transforming the cell to express a fucose kinase; (ii) Transforming the cell to express a fucose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase; and (iii) Transforming the cell to express a fucosyltransferase. The fucosylated compound can be a fucosyllactose or lactodifucotetraose. The cell can be a microorganism from Escherichia, Klebsiella, Helicobacter, Bacillus, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Pichia, Saccharomyces and Kluyveromyces.
