In the title process the sulphite solns obtd by desulphurisation of gases by washing are treated with HNO3 to give SO2 which may be liquified and a soln of nitrate which may be used as a fertiliser or, if the soln contains Ca(NO3)2, may it be treated with CO2 and NH3 to give CaCO3 in a finely divided form suitable for neutralising gases and vapours.
