PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods of control and prophylaxis of inflammation and mitigation of inflammatory conditions, particularly arthritis and joint pain, in companion animals, e.g., dogs or cats.SOLUTION: A dietary treatment method for control, mitigation or prophylaxis of inflammation comprises administering to a subject animal a diet comprising 10-10,000 ppm of lipoic acid for a period of at least two weeks. The diet comprises at least 500 IU/kg of Vitamin E, at least 200 ppm of carnitine, and at least 50 ppm of lipoic acid.
