PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition for treatment and prevention of arthritis or inflammation diseases containing 2,4- bis(p-hydroxy phenyl)-2-butenal is provided to prevent production of lipopolysaccharide(LPS) - induced active oxygen species(ROS), nitric oxide(NO) or prostaglandin E2(PGE2).CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for treatment and prevention of inflammation diseases contains 2,4- bis(p-hydroxy phenyl)-2-butenal as an active ingredient. The inflammation disease is rheumatoid arthritis. The 2,4-bis (P-hydroxy phenyl)-2-butenal prevents expression of LPS-induced nitric oxide and cyclooxygenase- 2(COX-2), transcription of nuclear transcription factor &kappa B (NF-&kappaB), and promotion of DNA bonding activities and/or promotion of the LPS- induced I&kappaB kinase activities. The 2,4-bis (P-hydroxy phenyl)-2-butenal treats or prevents the inflammation diseases by preventing I&kappaB activities through dephosphorylation of I&kappaB kinase.
