Medical apparatus includes one or more magneticfield generators, which are configured to generatemagnetic fields within a body of a patient. An invasiveprobe includes an insertion tube having a distal end,which is configured for insertion into the body, and aplurality of flexible splines configured to be deployedfrom the distal end of the insertion tube. Each splineincludes a flexible, multilayer circuit board and aconductive trace that is formed in at least one layer ofthe circuit board and is configured to define one or morecoils, which are disposed along a length of the splineand output electrical signals in response to the magneticfields. A processor iscoupled to receive and processthe electrical signals output by the coils in order toderive respective positions of the flexible splines inthe body.
