The present invention relates to a driver assistance system for assisting a driver in collision-relevant situations of a vehicle (8), said driver assistance system comprising at least one sensor (2) for distance measurement, an evaluation unit (3) and storage means (5) for providing data regarding the surface geometry of the vehicle. The evaluation unit (3) is designed to establish a three-dimensional image of the driving situation on the basis of signals received from the sensors, to determine distances from collision-relevant points of the surroundings (F) of the vehicle to the surface of the vehicle on the basis of signals received from the sensors and on data regarding the surface geometry of the vehicle (8), and to establish a set of data for the optical display of a section specific to a driving situation of the three-dimensional image of the driving situation.
