PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic-inorganic composite thickened body having high thixotropic property and a method for preparing the same, and to provide a gel cosmetic or a substrate for an external preparation containing the thickened body.SOLUTION: In this organic-inorganic composite thickened body, which is a thickened body formed by mixing aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer material (a) selected from carboxymethylcellulose sodium, hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, xanthan gum and carrageenan, with aqueous solution of synthetic layered sodium silicate-magnesium (b), the ratio (a)/(b) between (a) and (b) is 5/1-2/1 in terms of the mass ratio. In the method for preparing the organic-inorganic composite thickened body, the aqueous solution of (b) is added into the aqueous solution of (a) so that the ratio (a)/(b) falls within the range, or the aqueous solution of (a) is added into the aqueous solution of (b) so that the ratio (a)/(b) falls within the range.
