PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a food or drink and a treating or preventing agent safely usable for the prevention or treatment of cerebrovascular dementia over a long period.SOLUTION: The food or drink for the prevention or treatment of cerebrovascular dementia contains carnosine as an active component and suppresses the death of neurocyte caused by zinc excessively released after ischemia. The carnosine to be used in the invention may be a synthetic product or a natural material, however, it is preferably a natural material from the viewpoint of safety. The preferable natural carnosine is, from the viewpoint of practicality, a material extracted, separated and purified from an inexpensive raw material such as broth discharged in the production of dried bonito or dried sardine, broth discharged in the manufacture of canned tuna, mackerel, etc., or waste chicken meat. There is no particular problem on the dosage form, form of food or drink and the addition amount of a third component unless these are allowable from pharmacological or food hygienic viewpoint, however, it is preferable from the viewpoint of continuous administration to use the broth, etc., as a raw material as it is without purification and mixing with other nutrition components and flavoring components to serve the mixture as a functional food or drink.COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT【課題】長期にわたり安全に使用できる脳血管性認知症の予防または治療用飲食物ならびに予防または治療薬の提供。【解決手段】脳血管性認知症の予防または治療用飲食物は、カルノシンを有効成分とし、虚血後に過剰放出される亜鉛に基づく神経細胞死を抑制することを特徴とする。使用するカルノシンは、合成物、天然物のいずれでもよいが、安全性の面から天然物が望ましい。天然物としては、例えば鰹節や煮干しの製造時に排出される煮汁や、マグロ、鯖などの缶詰製造時に排出される煮汁、あるいは廃鶏肉等の安価な原料から抽出、分離、精製されたものが、実用性の面から好適である。剤形、飲食物の形態、第三成分の添加配合は、薬学的あるいは食品衛生上許容されるものであれば特に問題なく許容できるが、前記煮汁等を精製せずにそのまま原料とし、その他の栄養成分や風味成分と混合して、機能性飲食物として供するのが、長期にわたる服用の観点から望ましい。【選択図】なし
