The present inventionprovides muscle-derived progenitor cellsthat show long-term survival followingtransplantation into body tissues and whichcan augment non-soft tissue followingintroduction (e.g. via injection, transplantation,or implantation) into a site ofnon- soft tissue (e.g. bone). Also providedare methods of isolating muscle-derivedprogenitor cells, and methods of geneticallymodifying the cells for gene transfertherapy. The invention further providesmethods of using compositions comprisingmuscle-derived progenitor cells for theaugmentation and bulking of mammalian,including human, bone tissues in thetreatment of various functional conditions,including osteoporosis, Paget's Disease,osteogenesis imperfecta, bone fracture,osteomalacia, decrease in bone trabecularstrength, decrease in bone cortical strengthand decrease in bone density with old age.
