PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for supplying water for raising plants, which can accurately detect the water content of a support from the outside of a container by a non-contact method not coming in contact with the support, and to provide a method for supplying the water. SOLUTION: This method for supplying the water, characterized by irradiating a water-retaining support 2 disposed in a container 1 with IR light from LED on the outside of the container 1, detecting the reflection intensity of the IR light on the support 2 with a light-receiving element 7 on the outside of the receiver 1, thus detecting the water content of the support 2 from the outside of the container 1 in a state being not in contact with the support 2, and controlling a water supply pump 3 on the basis of the detection result to retain the water content within a constant range.
