PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preferable method for detecting the moisture content in soil, a method for controlling water supply and a water supply control system for controlling the water supply control in potted cultivation for supplying water by a method for supplying water from the base. SOLUTION: The method for detecting the moisture content in the soil comprises thrusting a soil water sensor, more preferably a soil water sensor detecting the average value of the moisture content of the soil contacting a rod-like sensing part in the nearly horizontal direction in the interlayer part of pot culture soil and detecting the moisture content in the soil. In the potted cultivation for supplying water to two or more or a plurality of potted plants placed on a cultivation bed by the method for supplying water from the base, the moisture content in the soil of the pot culture soil is detected by the method for detecting the moisture content of the soil to control the start and completion of the water supply based on detected values. Fully automatic control is more preferably performed with a data processing apparatus processing the detected values of the moisture content in the soil and an automatic water supply apparatus operable with command of the data processing apparatus.
