1. A substantially pure composition separated from a plant cell, said composition is capable of activating the expression of a sesquiterpene synthase gene in a plant cell, wherein (1) said composition is capable of activating the expression of a sesquiterpene synthase gene in said plant cell, after being treated with protease, pectinase, DNase or Rnase; (2) said composition is capable of activating the expression of a sesquiterpene synthase gene in said plant cell, after being lyophilized and reconstituted; (3) said composition does not partition into the organic phase following extraction with hexane; and (4) said composition comprises a diffusible compound having a molecular weight less than or equal to 10,000 daltons. 2. A composition of claim 1, wherein said compound is diffusible and has a molecular weight less than or equal to 1,000 daltons. 3.
