The present invention relates to nanoparticles for systemic or local delivery of lipophilic diagnostic or therapeutic agents to a subject in need thereof. The nanoparticles of the present invention comprise a water-soluble polymer and at least one of a biocompatible lipid and a lipophilic drug. The present invention further relates to ophthalmic treatments using the nanoparticles of the present invention. In addition, the present invention relates to compositions and formulations comprising the nanoparticles of the present invention.
