The present disclosure provides a detection system for detecting a nitrate containing compound in a test sample comprising: a chamber including first and second light transmissive cavities configured to house a first and second sample holders a first light source configured to illuminate the first sample holder containing a first test sample therein a second light source configured to illuminate the second sample holder containing a second test sample therein a first and second detectors configured to measure optical intensity changes due to absorption of light by the first and second test samples a signal processing module configured to receive and process signals from the first and second detectors a display module configured to display the measured concentration of the nitrate containing compound. The present disclosure further provides a method of simultaneous measurement of concentrations of nitrate ion and corresponding cation of a nitrate containing compound and thereby enabling highly reliable and accurate determination of concentration of the nitrate containing compound.
