The invention relates to a mechanical device meant for determining the spring's elastic constant and viscous friction coefficient of a damper within a shock absorber. According to the invention, the device comprises an enclosure (1) provided with a displacement sensor (21) resting on an absorber consisting of a spring (7) and a damper (8), which can slide with negligible friction along two vertical parallel columns (2 and 3) fixed with two plates (4 and 5), the extremities of the absorber being attached to the enclosure (1) and to the second plate (5) with some attachment devices (9 and 10), where the harmonic oscillatory inertial force acting on the absorber is generated by a train consisting of four identical gears (12, 13, 14 and 15) put into motion by a variable speed electric motor (11) whose shaft is provided with a speed measuring sensor (20), two gears (12 and 15) rotating in opposite directions, with a speed equal to the speed of the motor (11), together with a rod (16 and 17) of the same length, eac
