208,868. Bates, A. M. Nov. 13, 1922. Paper and like bags, sacks, and the like, making.-Relates to methods of and means for making and filling bag-like packages, of paper, fabric, &c., in which a tube of bag-forming material is closed at the lower end by a transverse seam, a charge of material is dropped into the closed end, and the tube closed by a transverse seam above the charge and severed above the seam, so as to form a filled bag. According to the invention, the transverse seams are reinforced by placing twine, paper, fabric, &c. along the sewing axis and sewing through the bag and reinforcement simultaneously. The open end of the tube may also be inwardly folded and the folded portions sewn with the rest of the collapsed tube. As shown in Fig 3, material from a roll A passes over a roller G into a forming member G<1> which folds it around a tube G<2>. Sewing mechanism or a pasting, roller H and a pressing roller H<1> unite the longitudinal edges, forming a tube D, which may be collapsed longitudinally upon the tube G<2> in order to form a reserve to draw upon. The end of the tube having been closed by a previous operation, a charge of material is fed from a funnel G<3> through the tube G<2>, and a sewing machine I is operated to sew a double seam, reinforcements I<5> of twine being incorporated therein. A cutter I<2> severs the material between the seams, a filled and closed bag J, Figs. 3 and 7, being produced. The tube D may be formed on the outside of a forming tube C, Fig. 1, reversed by being drawn down inside, collapsed longitudinally, and drawn over an enlarged part E' of the central tube E against the resistance of an elastic retaining band E<2>. The end of the seam may be further reinforced by folding in portions K, Fig. 8, of the sides of the bag so as to provide four thicknesses of material at the corners, in addition to the reinforcements I<5>. The bag is folded inwardly to an extent sufficient to make the length of the seam equal to the diameter of the filled bag. The bag may be made of crinkled paper and the reinforcement of twine, heavy paper, cardboard, cloth, &c. and may be applied to one side only of the seam. Specification 182,972 is referred to.
