Antiviral compositions and methods that are particularly effective for the treatment and prevention of influenza A virus are contemplated. Also presented is the identification of small compounds with antiviral properties, particularly as they relate to the detection of influenza A RNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity in mammalian cells independent of other influenza A components Cell assay.
