Emission of substances causing acid rain from animal manuremm is prevented by adding chemicals to the manure. The manure is treated with acid, esp. H2SO4, HNO3 and/or H3PO4, opt. together with lime, NH3 and/or K-contg. substances. Sufficient lime may be added to reduce the water soluble phosphate content of the manure. The lime may be in the form of aCaCO3, CaO or Ca(OH)2 and may be derived from normal or dolomitic limestone. Gypsum may also be used.
