PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the lowering of the drying capacity of an object to be sterilized caused by that the temperature in a steam supply space becomes lower than that in a sterilizing chamber during a sterilizing step and drain occurs on the wall of the sterilizing chamber to fall.
SOLUTION: In this steam sterilizer equipped with the sterilizing chamber 1, the steam supply space 2 for heating the sterilizing chamber 1, a first steam supply valve 5 for supplying steam to the sterilizing chamber 1, a second supply valve 6 for supplying steam to the steam supply space 2, the pressure detector 15 in the sterilizing chamber 1, the pressure detector 16 in the steam supply space 2 and a control means 18 for performing the sterilizing step and the drying step, the control means 18 opens and closes the steam supply valve 5 or increases and decreases the opening degree of the steam supply valve 5 so as to hold the pressure in the sterilizing chamber 1 to a first set value and opens and closes the steam supply valve 6 or increases and decreases the opening degree of the steam supply valve 6 so as to hold the pressure in the steam supply space 2 to a second set value. The second set value is set to a value calculated by adding a compensation value, which prevents the pressure in the steam supply space 2 from becoming lower than that in the sterilizing chamber 1 by the rising delay of the pressure in the steam supply space 2 at the time of opening of the steam supply valve 6 or increase in the opening degree of the steam supply valve 6, to the first set value.
