Internal combustion engines are used in various environments such as expressways, city centres, mountainous regions, tropical regions and cold regions, and the external environment varies widely over time. However, there is a limited range of selection in which general internal combustion engines can be selected, thus reducing energy efficiency. If the displacement and the compression ratio are adjusted to respond appropriately to various environments, then the drop in efficiency can be prevented and hence an efficiency increasing effect can be obtained. The present invention comprises a mechanical structure for adjusting the position of the cylinder block, and a load adjuster operating on the principle of a lever. When the position of the cylinder block and the load adjuster are appropriately adjusted, the displacement and the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine can be adjusted. A structure which allows the compression ratio to be adjusted provides a wide range of selection in the type of fuel used and in ignition methods. The article of the present invention has a structure which allows various settings matched to the external environment. Consequently, it can be used as an internal combustion engine in automobiles, construction machinery, agricultural machinery and the like.
