The safety needle device has a housing, a retractable sheath and a needle cannula. The retractable sheath includes a tubular portion that completely or partially encases the length of the cannula slidably mounted about a portion of the housing. The retractable sheath includes a sheath bevel having a blunt or oblique tip at the distal end. The beveled tip is configured at an appropriate injection angle and may be fixed or rotatable. The sheath bevel can include a contact surface that engages the skin at the distal end. The needle may be coupled to a needle hub at the proximal end of the housing and includes a needle bevel at the distal end. The sheath bevel and the needle bevel can be offset from each other.
