An automatic injection apparatus (20) comprising a housing (22), a needle syringe (110) with a plunger (116), at least one thrust element (149) for moving the needle syringe in a first direction inside of the housing to extend the syringe needle beyond the housing and to advance the plunger to force the contents of the syringe through the needle for an injection, and a delay mechanism, comprising the delay mechanism: a shuttle (170) for the syringe, said shuttle including a first engagement element (234); a follower (250) which includes a second engagement element (254), said second engagement element cooperating with said first engagement element to limit the movement of said shuttle relative to said follower in a second direction opposite the first direction; a blocking element (280) that is movable within said housing from a blocking position to a release position by coupling with the syringe plunger during an injection, avoiding said blocking element, when in said blocking position, the rotation of said follower in relation to said shuttle, allowing said blocking element, when in said release position, the rotation of said follower in relation to said shuttle; a damping compound (315) between said follower and a support surface for damping the rotation of said follower in relation to said shuttle; characterized in that the delay mechanism further comprises a double-acting thrust element (290) having a torsion preload and an axial preload, said double-acting thrust element acting between said shuttle and said follower to provide both a torsional force that drives said follower so that it rotates relative to said shuttle and an axial force that drives said shuttle away from said follower; whereby, when said blocking element moves towards said release position during an injection, said double force operating thrust element, firstly, said follower so that it rotates in relation to said shuttle from a hooking position, in which said first and second coupling elements
