A delay mechanism for an automatic injection apparatus having a housing (22), a needle syringe (30) with a plunger (36, 38) and a plurality of deflection elements (44, 72) for moving the syringe with needle in a first direction inside the housing to extend the syringe needle beyond the housing, to advance the plunger to force the contents of the syringe through the needle for an injection, and to retract the needle into the housing after injection, comprising: a shuttle (50, 375) for the syringe, said shuttle including a first engagement element (62); a follower (110, 475) that includes a second engagement element (118) and a cam-operable surface (115), said second engagement element cooperating with said first engagement element to limit the movement of said shuttle with respect to said follower in a second direction opposite the first direction; a blocking member (80, 496) movable within said housing from a blocking position to a release position by coupling with the syringe plunger during an injection, preventing said blocking member, when it is in said blocking position, the rotation of said follower relative to said shuttle. allowing said blocking member, when in said release position, the rotation of said follower relative to said shuttle; a damping compound (140, 530) between said follower and a support surface (136) to dampen the rotation of said follower relative to said shuttle; an actuator (95, 460) rotatably fixed relative to said shuttle and including a cam surface; and an actuator deflection element (72, 455) to force said actuator from a first position to a second position when said blocking member moves to said release position, whereby during movement of said actuator to said second position , said cam surface of the actuator engages said cam driven surface of the follower to force said follower to rotate relative to said shuttle from a hitching position, wherein said first and second hitch elements cooperate, in a position of disengagement, wherein
