An injection device (110) is disclosed comprising a housing adapted to receive a syringe (114) having a discharge nozzle. The syringe is movable along a longitudinal axis of the housing between a retracted position an extended position in which the discharge nozzle extends from the housing through an exit aperture. A cap (111) is removably located over the exit aperture and a needle shield (123) is removably located over the discharge nozzle and connected to the cap (111). A syringe carrier (127) is adapted to support the syringe (114) as it is advanced and a locking component (171) is adapted to prevent movement of the syringe carrier (127) and/or syringe (114) towards the exit aperture when engaged. The locking component (171) is in an engaged position when the cap (111) is located on the housing and during removal of the cap from the housing. The cap comprises a body (111) and a sleeve (121) located within the body and the locking component (171) is maintained in its engaged position by the sleeve (121) during removal of the cap (111). The needle shield also (123) becomes removed from the discharge nozzle during the removal of the cap (111) from the housing.
