A footgauge 10 comprises: a first end abutment 14 and a carriage 12 having a support portion 22 for receiving a camera 23, the carriage 12 includes a second end abutment 21 and is movable in a guided lengthwise direction towards and away from the first end abutment 14； the foot gauge 10 further comprises a graduated scale 17 extending in the same direction as the carriage 12 is movable； the scale 17 is fixed relative to said first end abutment 14； in use the lens of the camera 24 is positioned by the carriage 12 so that it is directed at the scale 17. The camera preferably forms part of a touch screen computing device such as a mobile phone or tablet. The carriage preferably includes an opening r window through which the camera 23 views the scale 17. The foot gauge 10 may be flat packed or by formed as part of a shoe box.
