Disclosed is a synergistic composition for managing blood lipid levels, wherein said composition comprises a) a first active ingredient selected from the group consisting of Huanglian, Huanglian extracts, berberine and berberine containing plant extracts (such as those obtained from Coptis chinensis Franch, Coptis deltoidea, Coptis teeta Wall or Hydrastis Canadensis) and b) a second active ingredient selected from the group consisting of Ku Ding Cha and Ku Ding Cha extracts (such as those obtained from Ilex kudincha (Aquifoliaceae), ilex aquifoliacese, ilex latifolia, Ligustrum robustum, Ehretia thyrsiflora, Clerodendrum fortunatum or Ilex cornuta), wherein the weight ratio of parts a) to b) is between about 10% and 90%.
