Whereby continuous or batchwise fermentation under oxygenated conditions with the use of a microorganism and one or more liquid nutrient media contng. C and N sources is carried out in a wholly homogeneous liquid medium, which is circulated in a vertical direction by means of air blown into the apparatus, and then overflows via overflow openings from the fermentation zone (A) into another zone (B). Specifically: The gased discharged from the apparatus are passed through a cyclone in which the alkanes are separated from the gases, and recycled to the fermentation.
