A composition comprising: lignin; less than approximately 2000 mg of elements per kg of said lignin; where said elements are Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sb ^ Se, Si, Sn, Sr, Ti, Tl, V, and Zn. 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said lignin has a calorific value measured in accordance with ASTM-D240 and D5865a of at least about 5,000 BTU / lb. The composition of claim 1, wherein said lignin has an average particle size of less than about 500 microns. The composition of claim 1, wherein said lignin has a bulk density of less than about 0.35 g / cm. The composition of claim 1, wherein said lignin is obtained from lignocellulosic biomass, optionally using extraction with supercritical, subcritical, or near-critical fluid, or a combination thereof.
