The surface inspection unit for inspecting a specimen (11), is esp. used for quality control and classification of wooden beans and boards using a camera (13). The view direction (16) of the camera is aligned on one surface of the specimen. The central view direction (16z) is aligned from the central direction on the specimen (11). At least one lateral view direction (16s) is aligned on the specimen across a deflection unit (17). The deflection unit is arranged in a position at right angles to the central view direction (16z) near to the specimen. The camera (13) has at least one single line detector. The strip shaped field of view extends at right angles to the axis of the central view direction, as well as at right angles to the length extension and the feed direction of the specimen, laterally across the specimen outwards up to the at least one deflection unit for detection.
