Disclosed herein are compounds having the formula: (I) where the substituents are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. These compounds have neprilysin inhibition activity and are therefore intended for the treatment of conditions such as hypertension, heart failure or renal disease. Examples of the compound of formula I include (2S,4S)-5-biphenyl-4-yl-2-hydroxymethyl-5-methyl-4-(oxalylamino)hexanoic acid and (2S,4R)-5-(5&rsquo；-chloro-2&rsquo；-fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-2-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-4-(oxalylamino)pentanoic acid.
