A method of non-invasively monitoring the respiration of a patient comprises: transmitting ultrasound into the body toward an internal structure of the patient's body, the internal structure being one of the liver, the spleen or a kidney； selecting a depth range； measuring the phase of ultrasound echo signals from the internal structure at multiple points along the depth range for at least a first and a second echo signal, the first and second echo signals being received at different times； detecting the motion of the internal structure within the patient's abdomen by reference to differences in the measured phase between the first and the second echo signals； and thereby monitoring the respiration of the patient by associating movement of the internal structure with movement caused by respirationLa présente invention concerne un procédé de surveillance non invasive de la respiration d'un patient qui comprend : la transmission d'ultrasons dans le corps vers une structure interne du corps du patient, la structure interne étant l'un parmi le foie, la rate ou un rein ； la sélection d'une plage de profondeur ； la mesure de la phase des signaux d'écho ultrasonore provenant de la structure interne à des points multiples le long de la plage de profondeur pour au moins un premier et un deuxième signal d'écho, les premiers et deuxièmes signaux d'écho étant reçus à des temps différents ； la détection du mouvement de la structure interne à l'intérieur de l'abdomen du patient en référence à des différences de la phase mesurée entre les premier et deuxième signaux d'écho ； et, ainsi, la surveillance de la respiration du patient par association du mouvement de la structure interne au mouvement causé par la respiration.
