PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device able to obtain light of high luminance by highly efficiently using excitation light even where a wavelength conversion rod is narrowed, and to provide an endoscope system having the same.SOLUTION: The illumination device 1 is adopted, which comprises a light source 15 configured to emit excitation light and a rod-shaped wavelength conversion member 10 configured to convert the wavelength of excitation light from the light source 15, the optical axis of the light source 15 being disposed obliquely with respect to the axis of the wavelength conversion member 10.
