A modular system for building a plantable wall comprises hollow masonry blocks made from concrete, said blocks having planar bearing surfaces for placing the blocks onto each other and further having a front and a rear side and the building blocks each defining a cavity that opens to the front side of the block. The system further comprises containers for receiving plantation substrate, wherein the containers are each configured as an open-top drawer that is insertable into the cavity from the front side of the blocks.
