The invention concerns a system and method for producing an image of a retina. The system comprises an illumination unit comprising at least two light sources having different illumination wavelengths, the illumination unit being capable of directing light from the light sources towards the target,a detector unit comprising a detector panel for collect light reflected from the target,and a processing unit adapted to produce one or more images of the target based on the light collected by the detector. According to the invention, the illumination unit is adapted to produce individually modulated light signals from the at least two light sources towards the target simultaneously, and the detector unit is adapted to distinguish between the individually modulated light signals reflected from the target for distinguishing between said illumination wavelengths.A lock-in amplifier is used to exploit a signal obtained from the detector panel as input signal and input signals of the at least two light sources as reference signals for distinguishing between the individually modulated light signals reflected from the retina. The amplifier has a short integration time of 2 ms or less, in particular 1 ms or less.
