PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a skin whitening active material containing a specific plant extract, which has performance more excellent than many whitening agents such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, arbutin and ascorbic acid derivatives, and to provide a cosmetic composition containing the material.SOLUTION: A skin whitening active material includes (a) at least one sugar fatty acid ester and (b) at least one plant extract selected from the group consisting of an extract of Waltheria indica, an extract of Pisum sativum and a mixture thereof, wherein the ratio of (a) the sugar fatty acid ester to (b) the plant extract is 15:1 to 1:1 based on the dry weight.
