The present invention particularly relates to breedable non-human vertebrates such as mice and rats that are useful for producing antibodies in which endogenous antibody chain expression is inactivated and possess human variable regions. This inactivation results in a deletion of the ADAM6 gene located within the rodent heavy chain locus, which is essential for reproduction.
