The present invention relates to a process (P) and anapparatus (400) for the real-time and high-reliabilitydetection of the total concentration amount (Q) ofcarbon dioxide (2) per unit of time contained in a flowof gas to be monitored (X). The process (P) comprisesthe phase of mixing the flow of gas to be monitored(X) with a first flow of gas (4) comprising a knownconcentration and/or amount of carbon dioxide (2), thusobtaining a second flow of gas (5); continuouslymeasuring the concentration/amount of carbon dioxide(2) in said second flow of gas (5) at regular timeintervals; continuouslymeasuring the rate of thefirst and/or second flow of gas (4,5); continuouslydetermining the amount (Q) of carbon dioxide (2) perunit of time of the flow of gas to be monitored (X);optionally continuously visualizing, preferably bymeans of at least one display (403) or similarvisualization device, the amount of carbon dioxide (2)per unit of time of the flow of gas to be monitored(X).
