A bone anchor having improved fixation is described. The bone anchor includes an anchor body and radially projecting ribs extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bone anchor. The leading distal end of each rib may be configured with a tapered “knife edge” structure. Such ribs can mitigate digging effects while maintaining contact between the ribs and surrounding bone along the length of the anchor.
