PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase denitration rate at a subsequent reduction treatment stage by making equal the generated rate of NO in mol to that of NO2in mol in treating nitrogen oxides in exhaust emission from an automobile by using SCR method. SOLUTION: In this exhaust emission treatment method, a part of NO in the exhaust emission from the automobile is converted into NO2by bringing it into contact with an oxidation catalyst, an ammonia or an ammonia generating substance is added to the generated mixed gas of NO and NO2and the mixture is brought into contact with the denitration catalyst to convert NO and NO2into N2for detoxication. A prescribed amount of exhaust emission is divided before it is brought into contact with the oxidation catalyst, and only a main stream is brought into contact with the oxidation catalyst to convert a part of NO in the main stream into NO2. Then, the ratio of NO to NO2is controlled to a same mol by converging the main stream to the divided untreated exhaust emission of a prescribed amount to increase the denitration rate.
