Disclosed herein are methods for diagnosing and / or treating inflammatory bowel disease associated with elevated IL-34 activity or expression. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions containing an inhibitor of IL-34 useful for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, and the manufacture of a medicament containing an inhibitor of IL-34 used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. In one aspect, a method of treating inflammatory bowel disease is provided, comprising inhibiting IL-34 in a patient.
